The Caterpillar In The Cocoon
12 January 2015

Clyde has a rigid routine.  He likes to sleep during the day and go out at night.  During the long summer evenings, filled with soft, perfumed, starlit nights, this is fine.  During the dark stormy nights of winter, this is not fine.  At least, not from my perspective.

I worry about my little Clyde when he's out and the rain is lashing and battering against my window.  I don't get a proper sleep then - I'm conscious that he might be at the window wanting in, so I'm half-listening for him.

Last night, the rain was pummeling my window, making it shake in its frame.  The wind was howling round the house like a wolf.  And, somehow, I heard Clyde squeaking at the window, begging to be let in.

I leaped out of bed, tripped over the trailing blanket I had wrapped round me and fell - the blanket curling round me like a cocoon round a caterpillar.  A pair of puzzled green eyes watched me, and, if Clyde could roll those eyes at me, I think he would have done.  I picked myself up and let him in.  He shot me a wary look and made for his dinner bowl.
