Robert and Michelle's Secret, Winter Elopement to the Isle of Skye
24 December 2014

You might say that it was a rope which bound them together - when they first met, while attending a climbing weekend in Pembrokeshire, thanks to Robert, Michelle got soaked to the skin!  But, he certainly must have made an impression!  The couple, both in the army and both at different bases, had to conduct a long-distance relationship and, from time to time, the subject of marriage would be discussed.  Finally, they realised that they had talked about it before but why didn't they just do it!

Michelle and Robert chose to have a romantic, fuss-free elopement with a few family members, finally opting for the dramatic, climbing landscape of the Isle of Skye.  The ceremony itself was particularly important to this couple.  They chose their own vows, personalised the ceremony and included readings from their family.

In keeping with their interest in climbing and their sense of romance, the very ropes they had used when they first met were incorporated into the hand-fasting ritual!

Their rings were passed from one member of the family to the next, in a ring-warming procedure, wherein the family added their own blessings to the marriage.

We had been a bit anxious about the atrocious weather.  We had been buffeted by storms from the west, with hail and rain.  Would the Euphoria "magic" work this time?  Quite a few prayers later ...   Then, in response to the weather forecast, Michelle brought forward the wedding by a half-hour.  We wanted some wind - Michelle's mother had created a luxurious "Scottish-Widows-style" cloak and I could imagine how wonderful that would look billowing in the wind.  We got the wind and the low, soft, beautiful sunlight to illuminate Michelle and allow the cloak to float dreamily!  Truly an outdoor girl, Michelle kicked off her footwear and posed barefoot for us in the winter light!

Since Michelle was longing to have the ceremony outside, everyone was thrilled when the wind dropped and they could comfortably enjoy the outdoors.  It was just perfect for them!  Michelle smiled and giggled through the entire time we were honoured to be able to work with her and I don't think anyone could have enjoyed their wedding more!

It's poignant that, because they are based in different locations, they will not be able to live together as man and wife until the army posts them together, which could be a number of months yet.  After such a joyful start to their love and commitment, we know they will be blessed with a love that will last for the rest of their lives.
