Kilchurn
Favourite Image from Wedding Proposal at Kilchurn Castle
28 August 2014

For this extraordinary shoot, the couple came from South Africa. Marc had carefully planned out his surprise proposal location, his kilt, picked out an exotic ring and, suddenly, it seemed as though his plans were faltering. His future fiancee’s uncle had commissioned us to photograph the proposal on the Isle of Skye in August. We had helped out with suggestions of location, accommodation etc but were acutely aware that this was one of the busiest tourist seasons we had ever seen. They were not able to come to Skye.

Marc went on to select the rugged and hugely romantic Kilchurn Castle, Argyll as proposal location but his future uncle-in-law was uncertain whether we would be willing to travel that far. However, Roz and I were keen to. There was a special poignancy about this commission because Uncle J has been battling serious health problems and it was extra important that he be there and have outstanding photography to treasure.

Roz and I were determined that this was going to be the best shoot of our lives. Jerry Ghionis always says, “Shoot as if your life depended on it!” Well, we did! We wanted Uncle J to have all his faith and confidence in us, justified. We swotted up relevant seminars and looked out new posing ideas so that we could produce something really wonderful for him. While we were working with his niece and fiance, he said these words to us, “ I wouldn’t have anyone else!” What a glow that brought!

All the elements which came together to make this shoot so special reached deep into our hearts. We wanted him to have our best ever.

This shot, taken by Roz, using the windows of a Range Rover as a reflector, is one of my favourites from the day. I love the clarity of the reflection and the warm expression and beautiful lighting on Robyn’s face.

Although it was a 5am rise to make the journey to Kilchurn Castle and an 8+ hour drive, in all, it was worth every second to be involved and share the pleasure of this unforgettable day in photographs.
